Internet Users Flock to Entertainment, Greenfield Says

Americans on the Internet are primarily looking for a little entertainment, according to Greenfield Online’s annual Netstyles survey.

More than 80 percent of 3,000 respondents told the company that the Internet is a “rich, diverse source of entertainment.”

According to Greenfield, Wilton, CT, 83 percent of people said they play games both online and offline. In addition, 52 percent subscribed to fun/jokes/games updates compared with 43 percent to daily news updates, 31 percent to e-mail newsgroups, 30 percent to business updates and 22 percent to stock market updates.

The availability of music and entertainment-on-demand is also becoming a factor with 66 percent of those with multimedia capabilities saying they use the Internet to download music.

Another piece of good news for the industry is that 36 percent of respondents said they plan to use the Internet more frequently a year from now than they currently do.
