Internet Marketers Top MI “Top 10 Scams” List

Michigan Attorney General Jennifer Granholm, who last year initiated legal proceedings against DoubleClick Inc. for tracking computer users without their knowledge, has ranked Internet marketers No. 1 on her top-10 list of scams in 2000.

The list was composed of the top 10 problems cited in more than 70,000 consumer calls to the state attorney general's office. Internet complaints topped the list with “online auction complaints, concerns about 'cookies' and online privacy, Web-based pyramid schemes and junk e-mail.”

Direct mailers ranked fifth on the list for “excessive junk mail and work-at-home solicitations.” Telemarketers, who ranked seventh, were criticized for do-not-call list violations and excessive telephone sweepstakes promotions.

This year is the first time sweepstakes or telemarketing complaints did not lead the list since the state attorney general's office began tracking consumer complaints.
