Internet Auction Fraud Down in 2000

Fraud complaints to the Federal Trade Commission regarding online auctions dropped from 13,901 in 1999 to 10,872 in 2000, the agency said yesterday.

An FTC spokeswoman cited increased protections by Internet auction sites, smarter online consumers and more surveillance by law agencies as reasons for the dip in complaints.

The 1999 number was originally 11,000 but was later revised by the FTC. The agency said it did not expect the number for 2000 to change.

The FTC said the overall number of Internet fraud complaints increased from 22,009 in 1999 to 25,469 last year.
