Internet Ad Sales See Modest Rise

Internet ad spending is rising 7 percent this year over 2000, according to a report released yesterday by eMarketer, New York.

The market research firm projected that online ad purchases will top $7.6 billion by the end of 2001, up from the $7.1 billion the industry saw last year. EMarketer said it used data from more than 50 research firms to reach this conclusion.

According to the firm's Online Advertising Report, cost-per-thousand banner ads continue to decline, almost 75 percent of Web advertising space goes unsold, 99.7 percent of banner ads are not clicked on and nearly 90 percent of Internet ads are direct-response-oriented.
