Intermec to Market Vehicle-Mounted Windows Computer

Intermec Technologies Corp., Everett, WA, last week unveiled an integrated business-to-business marketing effort for a new vehicle-mounted, Windows-based color computer — the 5055 Data Collection PC — which the company said it's already shipping for use in warehousing, manufacturing, trucking and customer-service environments.

“We have all of our launch pieces in place including our direct marketing, sales materials and postcards plus some other elements we are still working on,” said James Spicuzza, communications manager for local area systems at Intermec. “We are also going to look at more electronic marketing in addition to the Internet technologies we will be relying on.”

Bill Huhn, vice president of marketing at Intermec said the company “really understands what environments are like out there. We're in the field every day, side-by-side with our customers.” And the 5055, with its magnesium case, is Intermec's answer to the need for a tough, vehicle-mounted PC.

Intermec, a global competitor in the development of automated data collection systems using mobile and wireless telecommunications systems, said its new 5055 is designed specifically for rugged industrial environments. The vehicle-mounted unit has been shock tested under extreme conditions including vibrations equivalent to 30 G's. And the company said it intends to make clear the product's durability in its marketing language.

“We will also be communicating that our products are part of a solution,” Spicuzza said.

Intermec's introduction of the 5055 follows its recent summer launch of the 5020 — a hand held model, which is also one of the first products of its kind to operate within the Window CE-based environment. Both products support wireless communication standards.

The list price for the 5055 starts at $4500.
