Interesting post on Dell/Twitter

I don’t mean to rumor-monger, but did Dell really say it has made $1 million in revenue through Twitter? A recent Mashable post quoted an InternetNews article, which said the following:

“Less altruistically, some businesses have discovered that Twitter is an effective way of communicating with consumers. Dell (NASDAQ: DELL) says Twitter has produced $1 million in revenue over the past year and a half through sale alerts. People who sign up to follow Dell on Twitter receive messages when discounted products are available the company’s Home Outlet Store. They can click over to purchase the product or forward the information to others.”

If that’s true, that’s terrific news that any direct marketer would envy — and I’d love to find out whether they are really tracking these results. Anyone at Dell want to weigh in? But I’d also be interested in finding out whether other marketers are tracking sales through Twitter in this way. Anyone? Anyone?
