Infographic: A few depressing stats about people’s priorities on social media

I think we all agree the situation in Syria is far more important than the outrage over Miley Cyrus’s twerking. But it would be hard to come to that conclusion if you took a look at the topics that get the most traction on social media.

This infographic from Brick House Security is a sobering look at people’s priorities on social media. During the US government shutdown, it might have seemed that everybody had something to say about it, but the truth is, most people on Twitter were far more concerned with album releases by Drake, Kanye West and Britney Spears. And the term “twerkin” was in in nearly 250,000 more tweets than the word “Syria.”

Of course it’s no surprise that pop stars and inconsequential fluff have an overwhelming lead over global issues when it comes to posting on Twitter and Facebook. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t a bit soul-crushing.
