Indiana settled claims against nine companies accused of violating the state's do-not-call list, the first penalties assessed under the law since the list took effect Jan. 1, the state attorney general's office said yesterday.
Penalties collected from the companies totaled $28,625. America's Digital Satellite Telephone, Las Vegas, paid the most at $6,825 to settle charges stemming from 13 complaints of list violations.
More than 1 million consumers are registered for the Indiana DNC list.
The attorney general's office has received 2,261 complaints of violations, 594 of which have been investigated and closed by the office. In most cases, single complaints are filed against companies, which the state then contacts to advise them about getting into compliance, the attorney general's office said. Those who received financial penalties had numerous complaints.
