IBM's new anti-spam technology, FairUCE, attacks the spam problem at the source by identifying the domain identity of the sender rather than scanning text in the body of e-mails for red-flag words, IBM Corp. said yesterday.
FairUCE analyzes the e-mail domain, e-mail address and originating IP address of suspected spam to trace it to its origin, IBM said. IBM is offering FairUCE for free via Alphaworks, IBM's emerging technology Web site that lets users try technology in the early stages of development.
FairUCE also combats phishing and spoofing, the company said. It can determine whether spam is originating from a bot device or zombie computer and also can block e-mail from spammers who forge their identities, according to IBM.
It runs domain names and IP addresses through a database of addresses to identify known spammers. In contrast, spam filters that analyze text can be a burden to computer systems and bandwidth, IBM said.
