IBM, American Express Ink Marketing Pact

International Business Machines Corp., Armonk, NY, took another step toward boosting online sales of its computers and related products by signing a marketing agreement with financial services firm American Express Co., New York.

Under the terms of the exclusive agreement, the 2 million holders of the American Express Corporate Card for Small Business will receive discounts of up to 10 percent on certain computer products when they use their American Express cards. In addition, the two companies said they plan to link their web sites and integrate the content to provide information about small-business technology applications and to give card holders the opportunity to purchase IBM products through the Internet.

Card holders will receive reminders of the IBM discount opportunity in the mail with their monthly credit card statement “three or four times a year” an American Express spokesman said. A print advertising campaign in several national magazines also will support the program.
