How do you hire the best marketing analytics professionals?

One of the hottest careers in the marketing field right now is in analytics. Despite the fact that these are highly sought after positions, finding the right person for your opening may be challenging.

When I look to hire a new candidate, the first thing that I look for is someone with a strong background in applied mathematics, computer science and statistics. This is the building block for the essential skill set that this position needs.

Another measuring stick that I use is to find out what software and computer programs the candidate is familiar with. For instance if you are using SAS, SQL or Visual Sciences, you want to make sure that they are familiar with your company’s programs and will not require additional, and sometimes costly, training on these systems.

Once a candidate or group of candidates fills the criteria that you are looking for, it is time to determine who the correct hire is.

One way to do this is to present the candidate with a series of case studies or tests that will show you how the candidates think and use their skills to solve business problems.

I am constantly looking to see if the candidate can think on their feet and if they can insert themselves into the mind set of a manager. This shows me creativity, innovation and intuitiveness.

The ideal candidate is one than can assess a problem at a high level and use methodical structured problem solving abilities to work through the problem. It also displays their understanding of the company’s big picture and how technology fits into the company’s goals.
