Hi-Tech Companies to Form BTB Internet Marketplace

A dozen hi-tech companies yesterday agreed to form an independent company to operate an open Internet exchange in the hopes of cutting supply chain costs in the hi-tech sector.

The founding companies are AMD, Compaq, Gateway, Hitachi, Hewlett-Packard, Infineon, NEC, Quantum, Samsung, SCI Systems, Solectron and Western Digital.

The new company, expected to launch within the next three months, will provide services to buyers and sellers involved in computing and electronics-related industries.

The exchange's end-to-end services will be open and available to all companies involved in the supply-chain process — consumer and business electronics makers, contract manufacturers, suppliers and distributors. All participants will be able to manage their e-procurement purchases and sales through the electronic marketplace, the companies said.
