Harte-Hanks Numbers Down for 2nd Quarter

Harte-Hanks Inc., a direct and database marketing company, reported a 3 percent decrease in operating revenue, to $228.7 million for the second quarter from $235.7 million in second quarter 2000.

In addition, the company's net income fell 2.6 percent in the second quarter to $20.8 million from $21.4 million in the same period last year. The second quarter ended June 30.

Direct marketing operating revenue fell 7.3 percent, and the shoppers, or mail advertising, division saw its revenue rise from $76.3 million to $80.9 million.

Chairman/CEO Larry Franklin said, “The direct marketing revenue decline of 7 percent reflects a midteens decline in both retail and high-tech/telecom and slowing in the financial vertical market. This compares to double-digit growth in the second quarter of 2000 for these vertical markets.”

Turning to the shoppers division, Franklin said, “Shoppers had another great quarter, especially given the strong performance in the second quarter of 2000.”

Harte-Hanks is based in San Antonio.
