Group Publishes Address Quality Best Practices

Ensuring the U.S. Postal Service and the mailing industry share crucial addressing information in a timely manner and processing address lists though a data profiling tool are just two of the 27 best practices in a new guide created by a Mailers’ Technical Advisory Committee work group.

“The main goal of the guide is to offer the industry a list of the best practices for improving address quality,” said Chris Lien, commercial mail market director at Firstlogic, La Crosse, WI, and co-chair of the work group.

The guide also explains that undeliverable-as-addressed mail costs the postal service $2 billion each year.

Lien said the best practices are not class specific and that the guide’s role is not to suggest new discount options for mailers.

“The main purpose was to help companies improve their customer relationship management by improving their address quality,” said Lien, who hopes it is perceived “as a foundation piece for the industry.”

The guide was presented at last month’s MTAC meeting in Washington. To download a copy, go to http://ribbs.usps.gov/mtac.htm.
