Money trouble was the reason GreaterGood.com — a for-profit Internet firm that facilitated online charitable giving — ceased operation last week, according to reports.
“As an investment this was a disaster,” Paul Goodrich, a GreaterGood.com board member, told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer last week. “But even though it was an unsuccessful financial investment, it was a very successful operation from the standpoint of benefiting charities. … I am hopeful that the good work can continue and somebody will quickly get the site up and operating again.”
GreaterGood.com was a shopping portal that allowed customers to donate part of each purchase to a nonprofit participant of their choosing.
In addition, GreaterGood operated several charity niche sites, including The Hunger Site, The Rainforest Site, The Kids AIDS Site and The Breast Cancer Site.
Visitors to these sites were able to make donations once a day by clicking a button. The donations were made by the sites' corporate sponsors and distributed to participating charities by GreaterGood.
GreaterGood could not be reached for comment and has posted the following message on its Web site: “GreaterGood.com is undergoing routine maintenance. We are very sorry for the inconvenience. Thank you!”
