Google to Introduce Mobile Network

Google SVP of Products Sundar Pichai said the company will make an announcement in the coming months of a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) arrangement that will put Google in the mobile services business, Techcrunch reported.

In an on-stage interview today at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Pichai said that Google’s take on the business will be to merge cell and Wi-Fi networks in a “seamless” manner. “We have always tried to push the boundary with the innovations in hardware and software,” Techcrunch quoted him as saying. “We don’t intend to be a network operator at scale. We are actually working with carrier partners.”

Google earlier reported that it has been working on projects to use balloons and solar-powered planes to deliver Internet connectivity to underdeveloped regions and remote locations.
