Google releases new AdWords options for mobile devices

Google today announced that advertisers who use AdWords will now be able to show desktop text and image ads on the iPhone, the T-Mobile G1 or any other mobile device with full Internet browsers.

What’s new is that the ads can point to desktop landing pages so companies don’t necessarily need to create a mobile landing page or ads in mobile formats. Previously, these devices would show Google Search results pages that had been modified for the phone.

Advertisers can now create campaigns specifically for mobile and get separate performance reporting. Advertisers also can opt out of this option and only show results on desktop and laptop computers.

The Official Google Mobile Blog explained how the process works: “To target ads for G1 and iPhone, go to your campaign settings tab in your AdWords account. Then for the ‘Device Platform’ option under ‘Networks and Bidding,’ select ‘iPhones and other mobile devices with full Internet browsers,’ explained Alexandra Kenin, product marketing manager for the Google Mobile Ads team, in the posting.

As additional devices that use full Web browsers are released to the market, ads will automatically be shown there as well.
