Google opens online Life mag photo gallery

In the latest Google-taking-over-everything news, the search leader has opened an online photo gallery that features millions of images from the Life magazine archive, 97% of which have never been seen by the public. The images, which span from the 1750’s through today, will also appear in Google Image Search results.

Available at http://images.google.com/hosted/life, the site offers users the ability to view and print photos for free, as long as they’re not being used to make profit.

Life’s parent company, Time Warner Inc., hopes to make money by selling hi-res, glossy framed prints. Orders for these prints will be processed by Qoop.com.

This is Google’s biggest foray into profession photography to date. R.J. Pittman, a director of product management said Google hopes to work out other similar arrangements in the future, according to the Associated Press.
