Google News now offers a news archive containing 200 years of information that lets users easily search people and ideas.
The archived articles are available through news providers like Time.com, The Guardian, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Washington Post and Newsweek Interactive as well as from news aggregators like AccessMyLibrary.com, Thomson Gale, Factiva, HighBeam Research and LexisNexis.
“Archive search on Google News is an example of the ways Google is trying to improve the overall Google search experience, working with partners to bring their content online and extend the amount of information available to our users,” said Bill Brougher, senior product manager at Google, Mountain View, CA.
When searching for a person, place, thing or event, users will see articles ranked by relevance to their query. They will be able to browse a historical timeline to get a broader overview of the results. Searching for information about the Cold War will showcase news written during that period as well as more recent coverage from the past couple decades of analysis.
Users can search archives from Google News (http://news.google.com) by clicking on the News Archive Search link.
“Google is offering a convenient and comprehensive way for users to search for historical information,” Mr. Brougher said. “We are pointing users to this content from a wide array of different sources, but all from one place, so they don’t have to go to individual sources to find what they are searching for.”
