Google Home users are facing widespread app crashes after updating to Android 16 Beta 1. The crashes have made it hard for many to control their smart homes. Common fixes like reinstalling the app or clearing the cache only work for a short time.
The issue has been reported a lot on Reddit and Google’s Issue Tracker. Google knows about the problem and is working to fix it. It has been about four days since Android 16 Beta 1 came out.
While the new OS doesn’t have a ton of bugs, the Google Home app crash is a big one because it affects smart home features. Many users have said the app crashes as soon as they open it. This didn’t happen with Android 15 updates.
A lot of users have also seen a “widget is not supported” error when trying to add the Google Home widget. Some have found temporary solutions like uninstalling and reinstalling the app or clearing the cache.

But these often only work for a little while. One user said, “This morning my Home app is back to crashing each time I attempt to open it. It’s as if it starts to open, then the entire app just closes without any sort of error message at all.” Another expressed frustration, noting that “Reinstalling is only a short-lived fix for me.
Crash loops again after a little while.”
Interestingly, not everyone is having this issue. Some say the app works fine no matter if they are in the Google Home app’s public preview or not. But for those who are affected, the problem really messes up their ability to manage their smart home devices.
A Google engineer responded on IssueTracker, stating, “Thank you for reporting this issue. We have shared this with our product and engineering team and will update this issue with more information as it becomes available.”
If you rely a lot on Google Home to manage your smart home, it’s best to wait before updating to the Android 16 beta. Those who already updated should watch for upcoming fixes.
Some users have found that using Google Assistant for home tasks still works. But the app’s full features are still not working right for many people. Hopefully Google fixes the issue soon for the sake of its loyal users.
