FTC to Launch Antitrust Against Intel

According to Federal Trade Commission documents released this week, the U.S. government will argue that the Intel Corp., Santa Clara, CA, has abused its role as a leading computer chip manufacturer.

The 50-page filing outlines the FTC’s view of Intel, which it characterizes as an unfair competitor that exploited its monopoly to gain access to the innovative technologies of Compaq Computer Corp., the Intergraph Corp., and Digital Equipment Corp., which is now part of Compaq. The brief was prepared for an administrative trial set to start March 9 and will likely run more than two months.

Intel released a statement claiming it does not maintain a monopoly position in the computer marketplace and that it has not sought to limit competition.
