Free AOL for Broadband Users?

AOL may be offering its services, including e-mail, for free to customers with a broadband Internet connection.

AOL CEO Jonathan Miller presented the plan to other executives at AOL’s parent Time Warner last week, according to media reports.

Under the proposed plan, AOL would no longer charge subscription fees to users who bought Internet service from another provider. Subscribers with an AOL dial-up service will continue to pay subscriptions.

The plan is an attempt to curb a decline in subscribers. AOL in the first quarter of this year saw a decline of 7 percent revenue and 13 percent subscriptions. However, advertising revenue increased by 26% during this period, balancing part of the subscription decline.
