Online credit-card fraud detection service bureau CyberSource Corp., San Jose, CA, announced that it processed close to 600,000 client transactions during the fourth quarter ending Jan. 1, nearly triple the number the company processed during the previous quarter. CyberSource also reported that its account base has increased by about 50, to more than 200 online merchants. CyberSource originated as the proprietor of downloadable software retailer Software.Net (www.software.net). The fraud detection arm of the business arose unexpectedly when CyberSourceís founders realized that the software they designed to protect themselves from online thieves would be a useful service for other online merchants.
