Fortune Small Business bumped to custom publishing

Time Inc. has moved production of its Fortune Small Business magazine (FSB) from its Fortune/Money Group to its Content Solutions custom publishing division.

Time insisted that the editorial direction of the magazine would remain the same. However, 14 of its 17 editorial staff members are up for reassignment to other areas of Time Inc., and FSB editor Dan Goodgame has left the company.

Cost-effectiveness was part of the decision, according to Dawn Bridges, SVP of corporate communications at Time Inc. She also said that the company felt that it was “important for a publication like Fortune Small Business to be able to draw on the depth and breadth and number of internal journalists and freelancers at Time Inc. Content Solutions. It covers so many different industries and sectors, and the magazine covers any and every small business.”

Bridges added that the move was not intended to affect distribution or audience engagement strategies at the magazine. Time will continue to distribute FSB for free to 1 million American Express Open cardholders — a longstanding circulation strategy borne out of a management services agreement with American Express Publishing. 

FSB readers have a median age of 50 and a median household income of $134,202, according to the magazine’s Fall 2007 MRI. Nearly 70% of readers are male.

No other major changes are planned for the magazine. The ad sales department will continue to operate under Fortune publisher Hugh Wiley; and editorial director Brian Dumaine will stay on, reporting to Fortune managing editor Andy Serwer.
