List veteran Howard Flood died of cancer near his Sea Girt, NJ home on Feb. 22.
Flood, who began his direct marketing career at McGraw Hill as an advertising sales representative, retired in 1991 after heading up the company’s List Management Center for many years. With 30 years of service to McGraw Hill, Flood was well respected among his peers.
“I knew him for about 25 years while he was the in-house list manager at McGraw Hill,” said David W. Florence, chairman at Direct Media Inc., Greenwich, CT. “He was a complete gentleman.”
Another list professional said Flood was a good mentor.
“He was a consummate professional and very much a mentor to me,” said John Papalia, president of Statlistics Inc., Danbury, CT. “I managed his files for about eight years up until he retired.”
According to Papalia, Flood was an innovator and was actively involved in the Direct Marketing Association and the association’s international Echo awards.
“He offered commissions on his selects way before it was standard to do that,” he said.
Flood is survived by his wife, Diane, and three children. His son Howard Jr. is somewhat following in his footsteps working in the publishing industry, said Papalia.
A memorial mass will be today at St. Denis Church in Manasquan, NJ. Donations in Flood’s name can be made to the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia.
