First World Conference on Direct Mail Scheduled for Aug. 24 in Beijing

About 1,000 delegates are expected to attend the first World Conference on Direct Mail, which will take place Aug. 24 during the Universal Postal Union's 22nd World Congress in Beijing.

The conference — which is the first private-industry conference supported by the UPU — is being organized by the 40-member Direct Mail Advisory Board.

The conference will include speakers Thomas E. Levy, director general of the UPU; Lester Wunderman, chairman emeritus and senior advisor to Wunderman Cato Johnson; and H. Robert Wientzen, president/CEO of the Direct Marketing Association.

The DMAB also will be distributing a prototype CD-ROM at the Conference called “The Worldwide Guide to Direct Mail/Marketing,” which will include complete economic, direct mail and postal information on five countries — Brazil, China, Poland, Finland and the United States. A CD-ROM with information on all 189 countries and territories within the UPU will be available in early 2000.

Issues to be discussed include terminal dues structures for international postal unions for the next five years, whether private couriers will be included in the UPU, and the impact of electronic media on the posts.
