FedEx Freight to Raise Rates

FedEx Freight, a unit of delivery company FedEx Corp., said yesterday that it will raise general rates by 5.9 percent effective July 22 to help fund improvements at service centers and in equipment, safety and security.

FedEx Freight is the $2 billion provider of next-day and second-day regional less-than-truckload freight services. FedEx Freight consists of two operating companies, FedEx Freight East and FedEx Freight West.

FedEx Freight said the increase will partly offset expected substantial increases in healthcare costs and insurance premiums in fiscal 2003. Both had double-digit increases last year, the company said.

The increase applies to hauling within states and across state lines as well as between the United States and Canada and other international service, FedEx Freight said. The increase also applies to minimum and access charges and some other service areas, the company said.
