Famster Targets Families with Safer Social Networking Site

Social networking site Famster Sept. 6 announced the launch a private social networking Web site for families with a focus on security.

The site allows families to build their own private site with dual layered password protection and read and write privacy along with other features to prevent public access to their personal information.

The site is a response to the growing number of issues surrounding safety and security of children and teens surfing websites and online communities, according to Kristin Criss, President of Famster.

The Famster site boasts more than 200,000 unique visitors and millions of page views. It has been live in beta version for two weeks and more than 15,000 Famster sites are currently active. Famster is free for consumers and ad-supported.

The Nevada-based company features a free flash based site that includes 1GB each of filing cabinet storage and encoded video storage as well as an e-mail account with 1GB of storage. Other features include unlimited photo uploads, scrapbook pages, a blog, a RSS reader, calendars, to-do lists, contacts lists with Yahoo! Maps integration and a recipes section with 23,000 recipes.

Famster also includes an animated visual component where you can create and customize personal images of characters for your family. In keeping with the family-friendly theme, the site is personified by a cheerful Famster hamster.

A subsidiary of online business service provider Ivenue.com, Famster plans to add additional features to the site including mobile capabilities such as calendar updates, photo and video uploads and Famster-to-mobile text messaging.
