EMarketer Report Predicts Online Average Spending to Increase

American Internet users will increase their annual online spending from $866 in 2001 to $1,089 by the end of 2002, research aggregator eMarketer said yesterday.

Data from online retailers indicate that repeat customers are accounting for a growing portion of online sales and that these customers are spending more each time they buy online, the New York firm said.

This creates “a healthy prognosis for Internet retailers across the board,” said eMarketer senior analyst Steve Butler in a statement.

EMarketer also found that most traditional retailers are still spending less than 1 percent of their budgets online.

The findings are part of eMarketer’s just released Retail Industry Online report.
