e-Fairness Coalition Supporting Internet Tax Investigation

Members of the e-Fairness Coalition announced their support yesterday of the Senate Budget Committee’s examination of Internet tax policy. The e-Fairness Coalition is urging the Advisory Commission on Electronic Commerce, which is preparing a report for Congress, to create a level playing field for all retailers.

“Sound economic policy requires a tax system that doesn’t favor one type of sale over another, or one type of shopper over another,” said Lisa Cowell , executive director at the e-Fairness Coalition. “A level playing field between e-retailers and brick-and-mortar retailers will ensure that all sellers are competing fairly.”

The e-Fairness Coalition has started an intense education campaign on Capitol Hill to inform members of Congress about the need to equally apply sales tax collection responsibilities to all e-retailers. The coalition believes that government should not provide e-retailers with a preferential tax subsidy at the expense of local communities, shopping centers and brick-and-mortar retailers.

ACEC will report its recommendation to Congress on the tax treatment of Internet commerce in April.
