Economy prompts new coffee offerings

Today’s unveiling of Starbucks’ new paired breakfast deals is a reality check for the company, which has built itself on pricey coffee offerings.

Given the ongoing economic turmoil, which has seen sales drops and jobs cut, the company came to the inevitable conclusion that consumers are demanding more value for their money.

As a non-coffee drinker, the frenzy over flavored coffees and double lattes has always been beyond me. But still, a deal anywhere is worth checking out.

The new deals, available all day for $3.95, will debut March 3 at Starbucks company-operated stores in the continental US and combine a tall coffee with four sandwich offerings or a tall Caffè Latte with oatmeal or coffee cake.

Not quite a value meal but similar to the deal pairings offered by Dunkin’ Donuts.

The announcement follows last week’s news that Starbucks is pairing with Draftfcb on direct marketing efforts and loyalty efforts involving Starbucks’ Card Rewards and Gold Card rewards programs.
