EBay Europe 1Q Sales Rose 84 Percent

EBay’s European sales grew 84 percent in the first quarter of 2000.

The online auctioneer yesterday reported gross merchandise sales from its German and British Web sites were $86.92 million, while the number of registered users increased 52 percent to 966,100.

The company attributed the increase to the introduction of listing fees in Germany and business-to-business sales, especially of heavy equipment and cars.

EBay's European operations, which are currently limited to only Germany and Great Britain, plan to expand into France and Italy in the second quarter and Scandinavia at a later date.
