eBay, Amazon and Walmart.com Dominate Christmas Day Online Visits

Data compiled for DM News by online monitoring service Hitwise USA Inc. shows that Christmas weekend visits to the Hitwise retail index of the top 100 shopping Web sites mirrors 2004 but at a higher percentage.

Visits to the retail index on Christmas Eve were 1.34 percent lower than visits on the same day last year. But visits this Christmas Day were 6.82 percent higher than 2004.

Thanksgiving Day remains the most popular day for visits to the Hitwise online retail index.

A reading of the Hitwise U.S. data for the top 15 shopping and classifieds Web sites ranked by the percentage of total visits for Christmas Day confirms the triumvirate that has come to dominate e-commerce: eBay, Amazon.com and Walmart.com, in that order.

According to Hitwise, eBay accounted for an 18.45 percent market share of visits Dec. 25 to the shopping and classifieds category. Amazon was next, quite far behind with a share of 2.9 percent. Walmart.com had a 2.22 percent share.

In numbers 4 to 10, Best Buy’s site had a 1.75 percent share, Dell USA 1.52 percent, Circuit City 1.42 percent, Apple iTunes 1.06 percent, Target 1.05 percent, craigslist 1.03 percent and Hallmark 0.68 percent.

Shopping.com, the Apple Store, BizRate.com, Netflix and Sears.com took the next five spots in that order, with market share of visits ranging from 0.60 percent to 0.56 percent.

A major site in Hitwise’s list to experience the largest increase in market share of U.S visits was the Apple iTunes’ store at www.apple.com/itunes. The site increased its share of visits Christmas Day by 165 percent, moving from No. 22 to No. 7 in the Hitwise shopping and classifieds category when compared with the previous day, Dec. 24.

Other fast movers were the Apple Store at store.apple.com, increasing by 145 percent from No. 40 on Dec. 24 to No. 12 on Dec. 25 and Virgin Mobile USA at www.virginmobileusa.com, up 164 percent from rank 47 to 16.
