Drugstore.com Sales Rise 32% to $145.3M for 2001

Drugstore.com yesterday posted $145.3 million in sales for 2001, a 32 percent increase from the $109.9 million reported for 2000.

Fourth-quarter net sales were $43.4 million, up 20 percent from $36.2 million in the year-ago period.

Yet the Bellevue, WA-based company reported a net loss for 2001 of $282.8 million, or $4.28 per share, compared with a net loss of just over $193 million, or $3.56 per share, a year earlier. For the fourth quarter, the company's net loss surged to $182.9 million, or $2.75 per share, from $43.2 million, or 68 cents per share, in 2000.

The company said that its average net revenue per order increased in 2001 to $67, up $13 from the previous year. Pharmacy sales accounted for 54 percent of net sales in 2001. It also said that annual revenue per active customer rose $50 in 2001 to $150.

Drugstore.com forecasts net sales of $200 million for 2002. It expects net sales of $40 million for the first quarter. It hopes to acquire 800,000 to 900,000 new customers in 2002 and 185,000 to 190,000 in the first quarter.
