This year’s group of DMN 40Under40 winners have a few things in common. Well yes, they’re under 40. Also they have a proven track record of marketing excellence and leadership, whether they’re in roles supporting global brands, or leading their own thriving start-ups. Over the next few weeks, you’ll get to know our winners, and what they’ve accomplished.
Joe Hyland is the Chief Marketing Officer at ON24
What has been your proudest career accomplishment to date?
I think it always comes down to the people you’ve worked with over the years. In college, I had no plans to get into marketing. But I did, through the help of so many great marketers at some companies like Stratus Technologies, Kronos, and Bottomline Technologies. To now be able to grow, teach, and impact the next generation of marketers at Taulia and now ON24, has been a phenomenal experience. The relationships I’ve cultivated over the years with my colleagues has been immensely rewarding. I’m especially proud of my current team and the innovative work we’re doing at ON24 — as we work everyday to make the lives of our fellow marketers easier. I’ve always wanted to market to marketers, and my time had ON24 has been a particularly fulfilling chapter in my career.
What’s the best piece of advice you can give to future 40 Under 40 honorees?
Always remember your buyers, not your other marketers. We marketers can be a little too focused on what our industry and our peers are doing. But what will truly differentiate you as a marketer is if you are constantly thinking about your prospective buyers, what they do, what their pain points are, what their lives look like — if you put yourselves in their shoes, that’s s when you’ll be able to effectively market to them.
What do you hope to accomplish in the next five years?
ON24 currently serves 40 of the Fortune 100. That’s a great number, but I’d love to really carve out even more market share for ON24 and become the go-to solution for all things engagement marketing. We’ve built so much here, and I can’t wait to continue to build on the momentum over the next five years.
What is one interesting fact about you that few people know?
Not many San Francisco technology executives were raised on a farm in rural New Hampshire. I was, and that’s usually surprising for folks when they hear my background. But I learned a lot about hard work and perseverance from my childhood, and those characteristics carry over to any career.
