DMA Nonprofit Federation Honors Peters

WASHINGTON — The Direct Marketing Association's Nonprofit Federation presented an award of appreciation to fundraising professional Geoffrey W. Peters for his work with American Charities for Reasonable Fundraising Regulation Inc.

The award was given at the networking dinner last night at the National Press Club during the organization's 12th Annual Nonprofit Conference. The conference ends today.

Peters, a vice president at Creative Direct Response International, volunteered to represent fundraisers in a lawsuit filed in Pinellas County, FL, in 1997. The plaintiffs in the suit were Creative Advantage Inc., Norman W. Leahy and American Charities.

“My office usually leaks like a sieve when it comes to rumors,” said a visibly surprised Peters. “I was wondering what my wife was doing here.”

American Charities for Reasonable Fundraising Regulation Inc. is a trade group that aims to protect the interests of charities in terms of regulations on their activities. The suit ended in November when a Florida court ruled that direct marketing firms that work with nonprofits do not have to register with the county.

Another suit concerning the nonprofit mailers themselves is still pending.
