DMA, FTC Release Data Security Guidelines

The Direct Marketing Association yesterday announced new guidelines for protecting personal information from data thieves and released a new security checklist developed with the Federal Trade Commission.

DMA officials said the effort was part of National Consumer Protection Week, which ends tomorrow. The theme of the annual event this year was information security.

The guidelines call on marketers to observe four principles of information security, including:

· Establishing security policies and practices that ensure uninterrupted security of information systems.

· Creating and implementing staff policies, procedures, training and response measures to protect personal data in everyday practice.

· Employing and periodically reassessing physical and technological security safeguards.

· Informing business partners and service providers of their responsibility to protect the security of personal data.

The full guidelines along with commentary are available at http://the-dma.org/guidelines/informationsecurity.shtml.
