DM, Retail Sales Rise at Brookstone, Coach

Sales at Brookstone and Coach Inc. were up considerably from the 2002 holiday season, both companies said yesterday.

At Brookstone, Nashua, NH, total sales for the two-month period ended Jan. 3 increased 18.5 percent compared with 2002 to $198.7 million. Direct marketing sales skyrocketed 29.6 percent to $33.8 million, and same-store sales rose 12.6 percent.

Year-to-date totals revealed that same-store sales were up 11.1 percent as total sales improved 15.5 percent to $413.8 million compared with the same period last year. The company's fiscal year ends Jan. 31. Sales in the DM segment for the year rose 15.8 percent to $71.3 million.

At Coach, New York, sales for its 2004 second quarter ended Dec. 27 rose 33 percent to $411 million from $308.5 million for the comparable quarter last year. Direct-to-consumer sales, which include catalog and Internet, increased 24 percent to $237 million from $191.5 million last year. U.S. comparable-store sales climbed 13.6 percent with retail stores up 16.4 percent and factory store sales up 9.4 percent.

Coach announced annual sales of $1.1 billion for the 2003 calendar year, the first time it exceeded $1 billion for a calendar year. Sales increased 34 percent from 2002.
