DM News to Produce Silver Anniversary Commemorative Issue in October

DM News will publish a special “Silver Anniversary Commemorative Issue” to celebrate its 25 years of service to direct, database and interactive marketers.

The commemorative issue, printed on glossy stock and included with the Oct. 4 print edition, also will be distributed at the Direct Marketing Association's annual show in New Orleans in addition to being mailed to the paper's 50,000 regular recipients. It also will be available in PDF form at DMNews.com.

Editor in chief Tad Clarke said the special edition will reinforce DM News' editorial leadership by delivering an authoritative selection of articles, written by industry pioneers and practitioners, that will highlight the trends, brands, people, suppliers and technology that have marked the last quarter century in direct marketing.

Publisher Ron Sichler said DM News will extend a discounted rate to advertisers who wish to participate in the anniversary issue, which he predicted would be a prized keepsake because of its comprehensive coverage of the evolution of direct marketing over the last quarter century.

DM News was founded in 1979 by publishing entrepreneur Adrian Courtenay, who has remained owner and CEO for the past 25 years while developing a number of spin-offs and related media properties. Courtenay also has been involved in a number of acquisitions, divestitures and start-ups in the building and architectural fields. He presently holds a majority interest in Government Security News, a rapidly growing monthly serving the field of homeland security.

According to Courtenay, the charter issue of DM News appeared on Sept. 15, 1979. The founding editor was Joe Fitz-Morris, who had been founding editor of Advertising News of New York and manager of the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo in the 1940s under Gen. George MacArthur.

Fitz-Morris also used the nom de plume J. Malcolm Morris, Courtenay recalls fondly, and had twin penchants for writing headlines that started with the phrase “Controversy Erupts…” and getting into spats with Robert DeLay, who was president of what was then called The Direct Mail Marketing Association.

Courtenay indicated there are many other anecdotes that marked the 25-year run of DM News, some of which will be mentioned in the Silver Anniversary Issue.

The issue is being edited by Mickey Alam Khan, senior editor and director of editorial and business development for DM News, who can be contacted at 212/925-7300, ext. 216, or by e-mail at [email protected] .

Supplier companies interested in advertising rates and information should contact Sichler at 212/925-7300, ext. 251, or by e-mail at [email protected] .
