NEW YORK — An air of optimism filled opening day of DMD Marketing Conferences New York, as traffic on the exhibit floor was busy and vendors were generally pleased with the prospects.
“We've been at a lot of shows recently, and believe me, we're very happy with the traffic here,” said Mike Gural, senior group account manager at American List Counsel's e-management division, Princeton, NJ, referring to ALC's prime location, which is at the main entrance to the exhibit floor.
However, William Kilburg, vice chairman of Whitehat.com, Tempe, AZ, said the floor was a little slow.
“It seems like a lot of people are attending sessions, but we've had some good leads,” he said. “We're hoping it will open up even more.”
Debra Goldstein, manager at Leon Henry Inc., Scarsdale, NY, said the morning was good, though things slowed down at lunchtime.
“It really depends on your location [on the exhibit floor],” she said. “Next year, the Javits Center will be great for the exhibitors, but there's nothing to do around the convention center.”
Leon Henry, chairman and CEO of the company, said he remembered not even having an exhibit floor at the show.
“We all just stood in a room and talked,” he said. “The exhibit hall came five or six years later.”
Connie LaMotta, president/CEO of LaMotta Strategic Communications, which is doing public relations for DM Days, did not have attendance figures.
“There's a high level of energy, and that I'm hearing from other people,” she said.
Conference organizers were expecting attendance to be down 5 percent to 10 percent, though on-site registration is up this year, said DMD president/CEO Chuck Cavanagh. Next year's show will move to the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center on June 17-19, 2002.
