DHL Plans On-Airport Center in Charlotte

DHL is building its largest U.S. on-airport service center at Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina, the global express delivery and logistics company said yesterday.

DHL, Plantation, FL, expects to invest $6 million, consolidating four Charlotte-area facilities into one service location.

The 80,200-square-foot facility will serve Charlotte and surrounding areas as well as parts of South Carolina. It will enhance the efficiencies of the Southeast operation and improve delivery times as well as allow a later pickup service offering for customers in the area.

The state-of-the-art site will handle a wide variety of shipments — including domestic and international parcels as well as palletized and container freight — and initially will employ at least 175 personnel when fully operational in April 2006. Construction began in September.

The center will have a handling capacity of 15,000 letter and parcel shipments per hour and increase DHL's throughput capacity in the area by 15 percent.
