DHL offers shipment transparency with new online tool

Express delivery and logistics company DHL is giving customers full control over their imports, or country-to-country shipments, through a Web-based tool called DHL Import Express Online.

DHL said its DHL Import Express Online enables customers to securely prepare and manage shipments from their personal computers.

Here, in steps, is how it works:

First, a DHL customer with an Import Express account number requests a shipment from its supplier via DHL Import Express Online. The shipment instructions are sent electronically, with the account holder dictating terms of trade, insurance and addressing details.

Second, the importer’s account numbers for the billing of transportation and duties are withheld from both messaging and paperwork for added security.

Third, goods are picked and packed by the supplier.

Fourth, shipment paperwork and automated advisories are prepared using DHL Import Express Online. The pickup is scheduled online and DHL courier collects the shipment.

Finally, proactive notification is sent via e-mail upon shipping, to the importer and the receiver.

The tool can support shipping transactions from 46 countries to anywhere in the DHL network. Subsequent rollout is planned to more trade routes throughout DHL’s network to provide customers with full visibility and control during the shipment process.
