Dell Drops Axe on 1,700 Workers

After much anticipation, Dell Computer , Round Rock, Texas, said today it would trim 1,700 jobs from its permanent staff.

The layoffs had been rumored for more than a week as the company struggled with sagging computer sales mostly due to the slowing economy. The company reduced its temporary staff earlier this month and closed its online marketplace last week.

The cuts were made in regular full-time positions primarily in administration, marketing, and product support. It is the first time the company has announced job cuts in its 16-year history.
