Dell Adds Bulletin Board, Other Features to Web Site

To help achieve its goal of 50 percent sales online by the year 2000, Dell Computer Corp. last month added new features to its Web site (, including a community bulletin board and discussion area.

Customers also can build a computer system and store the configuration for as many as two weeks so they or a friend can review the system at a later date. The discussion area, dubbed Dell Web Talk, serves as an information exchange for Dell computers and already touts more than 25,000 registered domestic and international members. Dell, Round Rock, TX, made these and other changes based on customer research conducted over the past year.

“We want to have one of the most user-friendly Web sites and online stores in the industry,” said Scott Eckert, director of Dell's online division.

Since July 1996, Dell's sales via the Internet have grown to more than $5 million a day. The site receives more than 1.5 million visits a week and hosts more than 3,000 Premier Pages, or private sites for its business customers.
