Data Breaches Continue; Banks Hit

Marketers who rely on data-driven campaigns apparently have more to fear from foreign hackers than they do from regulators in Washington. Yesterday Bloomberg.com reported that Russian hackers infiltrated JP Morgan Chase, possibly in retaliation for government-imposed sanctions.

A subsequent report in the New York Times said that at least four other banks were hit by the same hackers, calling up information provided by sources familiar with an investigation into the breach. The FBI and several private security firms are investigating the incident, which resulted in stolen checking and savings account information. The Times’ sources were unsure whether the breaches were financially or politically motivated.

Last week federal authorities announced that several U.S. retailers had systematically infiltrated the customer data files of several U.S. retailers from January through August. Both The UPS Store and Supervalu disclosed breaches to their customers this month.
