Cyber Monday Sales Tracking 9 Percent Ahead of Last Year

As of noon this Cyber Monday, online sales were trending up 9.2% over 2013, according to the IBM Digital Analytics Benchmark, which tracks activity on some 800 U.S. retail sites.

Average order volume is flat at $135.51, but shoppers across the board are buying 4% more items. They are taking advantage of deals spread out over the long promotional weekend and, IBM suggests, are becoming more adept at using online coupons and rebates.

Interestingly, while mobile’s share of online website traffic is high at 40%, that’s significantly lower than the 51% of traffic it provided from Thanksgiving through Sunday. Apple iOS users are averaging $127.85 per order compared to $104.81 for Android aficionados.

Desktops, which don’t get much press in this period of mobile proliferation, still drive the Cyber Monday bus. Sixty percent of e-commerce website visitors today are on their PCs, and they’re making 77% of all purchases.

IBM is watching Facebook and Pinterest for their purchasing influence, and Facebook is winning the day. It’s inspiring orders of $126.51 versus Pinterest’s $90.60.
