Cowboys Buck NFL Online Scheme

The Dallas Cowboys broke NFL ranks yesterday when team owner Jerry Jones hired Broadband Sports to manage the team’s Web site over the next five years.

NFL teams voted last week to put all of its teams’ Web sites under the NFL banner and share revenue equally. The league will link nfl.com to team’s Web sites and allow teams to rebroadcast video highlights and use NFL footage on the Web sites.

The Cowboys voted against the deal and backed it with yesterday’s move.

Jones said he wants to develop a Web site that includes streaming video of team practices, documentaries and location shoots.

Broadband Sports operates athletesdirect.com, which has links to 200 athlete and team sites. According to reports, Jones will likely have a controlling stake in the company.
