Convergys Plans 2 Call Centers in Philippines

Convergys Corp. announced yesterday its second offshore expansion initiative in as many months with the planned opening of two call centers in the Philippines.

Jack Freker, president of the Convergys customer management group, announced the expansion after a meeting with Philippines president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in New York. Arroyo is visiting the United States this week on an invitation from President Bush, who honored Arroyo with an official state dinner and declared the Philippines a major non-NATO ally.

Construction on the new facilities in Manila has begun, with the first of the two expected to open within two months, Convergys said. When at capacity in 12 to 14 months, the two centers will house 880 workstations.

Convergys has selected the advance staff of 15 call center managers and is interviewing for the first 60 agent positions. Training will commence in August.

The centers will have 100,000 square feet of space on six floors. They will include a modern language center and four training rooms as well as administrative and cafeteria areas.

The centers will provide 24-hour help desk services to companies in financial services, communications and consumer products, Convergys said. Voice, e-mail and Web chat communications will be supported.

In April, Convergys announced its plan to open a 1,500-seat call center in Bangalore, India, within 30 days. Convergys operates a similar center in New Delhi, India.

ICT Group, another U.S. teleservices firm, opened a 250-seat call center this month in Manila.
