Steven T. Florio resigns next month as president/CEO of Conde Nast Publications after 10 years as overseer of the New York publisher of such glossy magazines as Vogue, Tatler, Glamour and Vanity Fair.
The feisty executive Feb. 16 takes the less demanding post of vice chairman of Conde Nast parent Advance Magazine Group. He is said to have stepped down for health reasons.
“I have been thinking about this change for some time,” Florio said in a statement. “Performance-wise, 2003 was Conde Nast's best year and I wanted to end my tenure as president and CEO on a high note.”
As vice chairman of the privately held Advance, Florio will report directly to chairman S.I. Newhouse. Advance's units include Conde Nast, Golf Digest Companies, Parade Publications and Fairchild Publications.
Florio in January 1994 became president of Conde Nast, adding the CEO title two years later.
His replacement at Conde Nast is Charles Townsend, chief operating officer of Advance Magazine Group. Townsend's previous stints included the publisher position at Glamour and head of The New York Times Co.'s women's magazine publishing group.
Florio was named president of The New Yorker in May 1985 when Advance Publications bought the magazine. Three years later he gained the title of CEO. Prior to The New Yorker, Florio was publisher for six years of GQ magazine.
The New York native began his publishing career at Esquire, where he rose from research associate at the magazine to president and advertising director in only nine years.
