Compaq Unveils New E-Commerce Computers

Compaq Computer Corp., Houston, yesterday unveiled its AlphaServer GS series designed specifically for e-commerce.

The computers can run up to 32 processors simultaneously, which allows them to handle millions of customer transactions at Web sites, said the company, which expects to double its share in targeted Unix markets over the next three to four years.

AlphaServer GS Series high-end 8, 16 and 32-way servers running the Tru64 UNIX and Open VMS operating systems combine Alpha processors with innovative hardware and software architectures, Compaq said.

The new systems have already shipped to a limited number of customers and pricing will vary based on configuration, starting at less than $100,000 for an AlphaServer GS8 and up to $1 million for an AlphaServer GS32 system.
